As-built drawing printing — record sets that are actually accurate
As-builts capture what was actually built. Wrong scale or missing sheets in the record set creates problems for every future project.
As-built drawings are the permanent record of what was actually constructed — deviations from design, field changes, and final conditions. These sets need to be accurate and legible because they'll be referenced for decades. Every set we print is reviewed by a real technician before shipping. Color pages auto-detected per sheet. Same-day UPS before 12 PM EST.
🎨You only pay for color where it exists. Mixed sets handled automatically — color pages detected per sheet. No manual selection, no overpaying.
These Are the Permanent Record. They Get Referenced for Decades.
As-built drawings aren't just closeout paperwork. They're the record every future architect, engineer, and facility manager will rely on. Wrong as-builts are worse than no as-builts.
🔮
Future renovations depend on this
An architect designing an addition 10 years from now pulls the as-built drawings to understand what's in the walls, where utilities run, what was actually built. If the as-builts are wrong, the renovation design is wrong.
📜
Required for project closeout
Many contracts and some jurisdictions require as-built drawings as a condition of final payment or certificate of occupancy. Incomplete or inaccurate as-builts hold up closeout.
🔧
Facility management references these daily
Building engineers use as-built drawings for every maintenance decision — tracing circuits, locating shut-offs, routing new conduit. A wrong as-built costs money every time it's consulted.
⚠️
Wrong as-builts are worse than none
A record drawing that shows conditions that don't exist creates false confidence. Someone trusts it, makes a decision based on it, discovers actual conditions when it's too late to change course.

📐
Scale is verified
Title block states a scale? We confirm the print actually measures correctly. The #1 rejection trigger — caught every time.
🔄
Orientation is checked
Landscape drawings that exported as portrait are caught before a single sheet runs. Not after it arrives.
📋
Missing sheets flagged
A set missing one sheet gets rejected whole. We review page count and order before printing.

FedEx doesn't do this
FedEx and Staples print what you upload. Wrong scale, rotated sheet — handed right back. We're the last line before rejection.
As-Built Drawing Requirements
What as built drawing printing actually requires
As-built drawings (also called record drawings) document the actual constructed conditions of a project — including field changes, deviations from the original design, and final MEP routing. They are required by many contracts, some building codes, and virtually all facility management programs. As-builts are often prepared by marking up the original design drawings with field changes, then redrafting or scanning. They must be legible at the printed scale.
1
Clearly marked as 'As-Built' or 'Record Drawing'
Every sheet in an as-built set must be clearly identified as an as-built or record drawing — not the original design drawings. This is typically done by modifying the title block to add 'AS-BUILT' or 'RECORD DRAWING' and the completion date. Submitting unmarked as-builts creates confusion about whether the set represents design intent or as-constructed conditions.
2
Field changes clearly shown
As-built drawings must clearly differentiate field changes from the original design. Common approaches include clouding field changes with revision clouds, using a different color to show deviations, or adding notes calling out 'field change' conditions. These marks must be visible and legible at the printed scale.
3
Scale stated and accurate
As-built drawings must indicate the drawing scale on every sheet. The print must actually measure at that scale. A wrong-scale as-built is worse than no as-built — someone measuring off it to plan future work will get wrong dimensions.
4
Complete set — all disciplines
As-built sets typically include all disciplines that were part of the original construction: architectural, structural, MEP, civil, and specialty systems. The as-built set for a building may be required by the owner, facility manager, or future design professionals. Missing a discipline means the record is incomplete.
5
Color for MEP systems
MEP as-built drawings frequently use color to differentiate systems — HVAC in one color, electrical in another, plumbing in a third. These color-coded drawings must be printed in color to retain their meaning. Our quote tool identifies color pages automatically — you only pay color rates on sheets with color.
6
Legibility of redline markups
As-builts prepared by marking up paper drawings and scanning must be checked for legibility. Faint pencil marks that were legible on the original may be lost in the scan. We check the print before running your full set.
Common Rejection Reasons
Why as built drawing printing gets sent back
These are the most common failure points we see — and what we check for before your set ships.
Common
As-built markups not legible at print scale
Field change marks made in pencil on paper drawings, then scanned, often print too faint to read. The markup that was clear on the original is invisible on the print. We check before running the set.
Frequent
Wrong scale — field change dimensions are off
An as-built printed at the wrong scale means every dimension measurement from the drawing is wrong. Someone planning future work from the as-built will calculate incorrect dimensions.
Common
Not marked as 'As-Built'
As-built sets submitted to owners or facility managers without clear 'AS-BUILT' marking on every sheet cause confusion. Is this the design set or the record set? Future design professionals referencing the drawing won't know.
MEP specific
Color-coded MEP systems printed in B&W
MEP as-builts that use color to differentiate HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems become unreadable when printed in black and white. Our auto-detection identifies these pages.
Frequent
Missing discipline in record set
An as-built set that's missing the mechanical as-builts means future HVAC work will have no record of actual duct routing and equipment locations.
Common
Incomplete field change documentation
As-builts that note 'see field' without actually showing the field condition are not useful record drawings. The physical print should show actual conditions, not reference unrecorded field changes.

Who Orders This
Common as built drawing printing scenarios
These are the most common project types and situations where contractors, engineers, and architects order as built drawing printing from Azul Prints.
Owner's Record Set
The permanent facility record. Typically 1-3 complete sets. One for the owner's archive, one for the facility manager, one for the building file. Must be complete and legible.
MEP Systems Record
HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection as-builts. Often color-coded by system. Required for maintenance, future renovations, and commissioning documentation.
Civil / Site As-Builts
Final grades, utility locations, storm drainage. Often required by the municipality as a condition of final occupancy. Must be at correct scale for future reference.
Structural As-Builts
Field changes to structural members, connections, and foundations. Critical for future renovations — engineers need to know what was actually built.
Specialty Systems
Security, AV, data, fire alarm, and other specialty systems. As-builts show actual device locations, panel configurations, and conduit routing.
Renovation Project Record
Before-and-after documentation for renovation projects. Shows existing conditions before renovation and as-built conditions after.

Typical order size
2–3 sets
Owner's permanent archive (1), facility manager working copy (1), sometimes a third for the permit authority's file. Some contracts also require a reproducible set for scanning. Confirm contract requirements before ordering.

They are the permanent record of what was actually built, not what was designed. As-builts are required by many contracts and are essential for facility management, future renovations, and commissioning documentation.
As-built drawings are typically printed at the same size as the original construction drawings — most commonly 24×36 (ARCH D) for commercial projects. Civil as-builts may be at 30×42 (ARCH E1). If you're submitting as-builts to a municipality or facility management system, confirm the required size before ordering.

MEP as-builts that use color to differentiate HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems must be printed in color to retain their meaning. Our quote tool scans each page and identifies color automatically — you only pay color rates on pages that actually have color.
Most contracts require 2-3 sets of as-built drawings: one for the owner's permanent record, one for the facility manager, and sometimes one for the permit authority's file. Some contracts also require a reproducible set or electronic submission alongside the paper as-builts.
Yes — as-builts prepared by scanning marked-up paper drawings are common. Our technician reviews the file before printing to check that all markup is legible at the printed scale. Faint pencil marks that were clear on the original can be lost in the scan and appear even fainter on the print. We'll contact you if legibility is a concern before running the full set.
