What causes blueprints to print at the wrong scale?

The most common cause of wrong-scale blueprint prints is a single checkbox in Adobe Acrobat: "Fit to Page" or "Shrink Oversized Pages." When enabled, Acrobat scales your drawing to fill the paper — turning a 24×36 drawing printed on 18×24 paper into a 75%-scale print. Your scale ruler reads wrong. Field measurements are off. The permit reviewer catches it at the counter.

The fix is always the same: print at Actual Size (100%). In Acrobat, select "Actual Size" in the print dialog. In AutoCAD, plot from a paper space layout at 1:1. The page dimensions in your PDF must match the physical print size you order.

The scale checker above reads scale notation directly from your PDF's text layer. If your file is rasterized (scanned or exported as an image), no scale text exists — and scale cannot be verified automatically. In that case, a human technician review is the only reliable check.

What the print readiness check looks at

Page dimensions: Reads the PDF's internal page size in points, converts to inches, and identifies the ARCH or ANSI standard. If your file is 24×36", it's ARCH D. If it's 22×34", it's ANSI D — not the same size, and a common mix-up on permit sets.

Scale notation: Scans the text content of your PDF for standard notation like "1/4"=1'-0"", "1/8"=1'", "1"=20'". If detected, the result is shown and the measurement tool calibrates to that scale. If not found, the file may be rasterized or the title block may be in a non-searchable layer.

Mixed page sizes: Checks whether all pages in the PDF share the same dimensions. A permit set where some sheets are ARCH D and others are ARCH C is a common cause of rejection — the reviewer sees a mixed set and sends it back.

Orientation: Flags pages where the width is less than the height on drawings that should be landscape — a common export error from Revit and AutoCAD that results in rotated prints.

Rasterized content: If the PDF has no text content, it's likely a scan or was exported as an image. Rasterized files cannot be scale-verified and may print with visible pixelation at full size.

No. The entire analysis runs in your browser using PDF.js — an open-source PDF rendering engine. Your file is read locally and never transmitted to our servers. The "your file never leaves your browser" note is accurate, not marketing language.
Scale notation is extracted from the PDF's text layer. Three common reasons it won't be found: (1) the file is rasterized — scanned or exported as an image with no searchable text; (2) the title block was created in a way that makes text non-extractable (some CAD-to-PDF exports); (3) the scale notation uses a non-standard format. In any of these cases, a technician at Azul Prints will verify scale manually before printing your order.
When a scale is detected (e.g. 1/4"=1'-0"), the measurement tool calibrates to that scale. Draw a line on the preview and the tool converts the pixel distance to real-world feet based on the detected scale ratio and the page's physical dimensions. It's a sanity check — not a certified survey instrument — but it's useful for verifying that a known dimension on your drawing (like a labeled wall length) matches what the tool shows.
No — and we're deliberate about not overclaiming this. The tool checks for common, detectable issues: page size, scale text presence, orientation, and rasterization. It cannot verify that scale notation matches actual geometry (that requires measuring drawn elements), check print settings that exist outside the PDF, or catch every possible file problem. At Azul Prints, a technician reviews every order independently — this tool is a pre-flight check, not a replacement for that review.
PDF only, currently. PDF is also the format we recommend for printing — it preserves exact page dimensions, is universally readable, and maintains vector quality at full scale.
