How we detect color vs black and white — per page, automatically

You only pay color rates on pages that actually have color. Every page in your PDF is scanned before you see your price.

Most blueprint printers require you to specify color or black and white for your entire order. Azul Prints scans every page in your uploaded PDF and identifies color content automatically — before you see your price. Sheets with color pay color rates. Sheets without color pay the lower B&W rate. On a typical construction document package with mixed color and B&W pages, this saves 20–40% compared to pricing the entire set at color rates.

🎨 You only pay for color where it exists. Mixed sets handled automatically — color pages detected per sheet.

How it works

Per-page scanning in your browser — before you check out

When you upload your PDF to the Azul Prints quote tool, the color detection runs immediately in your browser using PDF.js. No file is sent to a server for analysis — the scanning happens client-side, which is why you see your price instantly.

📄
Every page scanned individually
The detection doesn't sample — it scans every page in your PDF. A 48-sheet construction set gets 48 individual page scans. Each page is classified as color or B&W independently.
🎨
Color content identified accurately
The scanner looks for non-grayscale pixel content. Colored lines, fills, annotations, and images are all detected. A page that appears black and white but contains colored vector elements at the file level is correctly identified as color.
💰
Price reflects actual color distribution
The quote shows your price broken down by color pages and B&W pages. You see exactly how many pages were detected as each type and what each costs before you confirm the order.
No manual selection required
You don't specify color or B&W for the order. You don't separate files. You don't re-upload. Upload once, get an instant price that already reflects per-page color detection.
Why it matters

Construction drawings are almost always mixed color and B&W

Architectural floor plans, structural framing plans, and most detail sheets are black and white. MEP coordination drawings, civil utility plans, and landscape plans are typically color. A 48-sheet construction set might have 12 color sheets and 36 B&W sheets. Pricing all 48 at color rates adds unnecessary cost — and most printers do exactly that.

🏗️
Architectural + structural → B&W
Floor plans, elevations, sections, and structural framing plans are almost always black and white. Per-page detection prices these at the lower B&W rate.
🌀
MEP coordination → color
HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection are typically color-coded in coordination drawings. Per-page detection prices these at the color rate.
🌍
Civil utility plans → often color
Grading plans, utility layouts, and erosion control plans frequently use color to differentiate features. Detected and priced accordingly.
📋
Permit sets → usually mostly B&W
Most residential and commercial permit sets are predominantly black and white, with only a few color civil or landscape sheets. Per-page detection prices the B&W majority at the lower rate.

How We Detect Color Vs Black And White — Common Questions

Specific answers — not boilerplate.

Any page that contains non-grayscale content at the pixel level. This includes pages with colored lines, colored fill areas, colored annotations, or color photographs. A page that looks black and white on screen but contains colored vector elements in the PDF file is detected as color. A true grayscale or black and white page — with no color information at any level — is priced at the B&W rate.
Yes — if you want a color page printed in B&W, contact us before confirming your order and we'll adjust. Some customers want the cost savings of B&W even on pages with color content, and the color information isn't critical for their use. The detection is a pricing tool, not a printing constraint.
Very accurate in standard cases. PDFs with clearly defined color content — colored lines, fills, annotations — are detected correctly on virtually every page. Edge cases include pages with very subtle color tints that are near-grayscale, or pages with embedded images that contain minimal color. If you're uncertain about a specific page, the quote breakdown shows exactly which pages were detected as color so you can verify before confirming.
Most online blueprint printers and reprographics shops require you to specify color or B&W for the entire order — not individual pages. Some allow separate uploads of color and B&W sections. Azul Prints' per-page detection is automatic and requires no separate files or manual specification. You upload once and the price already reflects accurate per-page color detection.
Yes. The detection scans every page regardless of total page count or number of sets. A 200-sheet construction document package gets 200 individual page scans. All sets in a multi-set order are priced using the same per-page breakdown.
On a typical mixed construction document package where MEP coordination drawings are color and architectural/structural sheets are B&W, savings of 20–40% compared to all-color pricing are typical. On a permit set that's mostly architectural and structural with only a few civil color sheets, savings can be higher. The more B&W pages in a set that would otherwise be charged at color rates, the greater the savings.
